METEORS FROM HALLEY’S COMET: Earth is entering a stream of debris from Halley’s Comet, source of the annual eta Aquariid meteor shower. Forecasters expect the shower to peak on the nights around May 5th and 6th with 30+ meteors per hour. METEORS from HALLEY’s Comet, Source of the Annual ETA Aquariid Meteor Shower
Earth is entering a stream of debris from Halley’s Comet, source of the annual eta Aquariid meteor shower.
Forecasters expect the shower to peak on the nights around May 5th and 6th with 30+ meteors per hour. The best time to look, no matter where you live, is probably during the dark hours before sunrise on Friday.
“Although the shower’s peak is still days away, the Canadian Meteor Orbit Radar (CMOR) is already detecting strong activity from the eta Aquariid shower,” reports physics professor Peter Brown of the University of Western Ontario.
“Processing from last night shows more than 200 eta Aquariids with orbits loosely matching that of comet 1P/Halley,” Brown says. “The equivalent visible rates are about 40 per hour – almost one per minute! Based on these numbers it is clear that sky watchers are in for a treat over the next few nights.”

You don’t need any special equipment to observe a meteor shower; just your eyes. Try and get as far from city lights as possible
(out into the countryside if you can, or into a local park if not),
and get comfortable.
You might want to bring a reclining deck chair with you, as that makes meteorwatching much more civilised! Just lie back and take in as much of the sky as possible. If you’re lucky enough to see a good display of meteors, you might see as many as one a minute, maybe more!

The entire population of the Canadian oil city of Fort McMurray was evacuated as firefighters battled an out-of-control wildfire that was likely to worsen Wednesday.
There were long lines on highways as 80,000 residents fled the blaze and oil sands work camps were pressed into service as emergency shelters.
“Apocalyptic” and “harrowing” scenes on social media showed vehicles facing thick smoke and raging roadside flames amid the largest evacuation in the province of Alberta’s history.
“The city is under a complete mandatory evacuation order,” Wood Buffalo municipality spokesman Robin Smith told NBC News early Wednesday, adding that an estimated 80,000 people had left the city.

Earlier this year scientists presented evidence for Planet Nine, a Neptune-mass planet in an elliptical orbit 10 times farther from our Sun than Pluto. Since then theorists have puzzled over how this planet could end up in such a distant orbit.
New research by astronomers at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) examines a number of scenarios and finds that most of them have low probabilities. Therefore, the presence of Planet Nine remains a bit of a mystery.
“The evidence points to Planet Nine existing, but we can’t explain for certain how it was produced,” says CfA astronomer Gongjie Li, lead author on a paper accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Planet Nine circles our Sun at a distance of about 40 billion to 140 billion miles, or 400 – 1500 astronomical units. (An astronomical unit or A.U. is the average distance of the Earth from the Sun, or 93 million miles.) This places it far beyond all the other planets in our solar system. The question becomes: did it form there, or did it form elsewhere and land in its unusual orbit later?

Editor’s Note: What is not being reported here as far as I can tell is that this is where the Tar Sands are mined. I have personally been to Fort McMurray and the entire place smells like oil, it’s covering everything and the ground for hundreds of miles around is saturated with it. This is horrific and truly frightening. Fort McMurray itself basically exists as a mining town, 95% of the people there work on the Tar Sands. The entire region is divided up among oil companies. FROM RT: The entire population of Fort McMurray in northern Alberta, Canada has been ordered to abandon their homes after a wildfire ravaging a nearby forest moved into the area. The fire has already destroyed homes in several neighborhoods.
Fort McMurray is an urban service area with a population of about 80,000 people.
Local authorities have advised residents to evacuate to the Noralta Lodge north of the city because outgoing Highway 36 has been partially blocked due to the fire.
A mandatory evacuation notice was issued for the whole city on Tuesday after the wildfire began spreading uncontrollably.
The fire first was detected on Sunday to the southwest of the residential area. It is believed to have covered more than 2,656 hectares (6,540 acres) as of late Monday. Although, more than 90 firefighters have been deployed to battle the fire, the situation on Tuesday has worsened due to strong winds. On Tuesday afternoon the fire breached Highway 63, the main road out of the city.
Several homes in Beacon Hill and the Centennial Trailer Park have been destroyed in the fire, CBC reported. read more
Two New Triple Asteroid Systems Discovered in the Main Asteroid Belt

Astronomers have discovered a new satellite orbiting the main belt asteroid (130) Elektra. This new, second moonlet of (130) Elektra is about 2 kilometres across and has been provisionally named S/2014 (130) 1, making (130) Elektra a triple system. Exploiting the unprecedented sensitivity and spatial resolution of the instrument SPHERE, the team also observed another triple asteroid system in the main belt, (93) Minerva.
Using the data gathered with SPHERE the team inferred that both (130) Elektra and (93) Minerva were created in an erosive impact. As a result of the collision substantial chunks of matter can break away into space to form small satellites of one of the original bodies. In this case the small separation of the satellites from their larger parent asteroids, the large mass ratios between the moonlets and the primaries and the same composition between moonlets and primaries support this theory.
Asteroids are the relics of the building blocks that formed the terrestrial planets in the early days of the Solar System. Studying asteroids with multiple satellites is of crucial importance because their formation mechanisms can provide information about planet formation and evolution that cannot be revealed by other methods.
The main Asteroid Belt is located in an area of space between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.

“The solar system beyond Neptune is full of worlds hosting moons. The dwarf planets Pluto, Eris, and Haumea are all known to have one or moons orbiting them. However, for years and despite no small amount of search effort, the dwarf planet Makemake appeared to be solitary.
In many ways, Makemake is much like Pluto; it is two-thirds the size and has a methane-covered surface with a reddish color that is indicative of a dose of tholin-like material. So why did Makemake lack a moon? Did Makemake made it through the history of the solar system without suffering a moon-forming giant impact like the other distant dwarf planets?
Now we know that the picture was simply incomplete before. Makemake does have a moon!
Earlier this week Marc Buie, Will Grundy, Keith Noll, and myself announced the discovery of a Makemakean moon in Hubble Space Telescope images. We nicknamed “MK2” and the IAU has provisionally designated it S/2015 (136472) 1. We’ve done a preliminary characterization of MK2’s properties and submitted a paper describing its implications, which you can read here. In the following post I’ll walk through how we found the moon, a few of the things we’ve learned about it, and what we can learn with future observations.
How To Find A Moon
The vast majority of Kuiper Belt companions have been discovered with the Hubble Space Telescope. The combination of its high sensitivity and its very high angular resolution make it able to see very faint objects right next to very bright objects. This is what allowed us to discover MK2 sitting adjacent to the 1,300-times brighter Makemake.
Exoplanet direct imaging also requires the ability to see faint targets very close to bright ones, and ground-based instruments like the Gemini Planet Imager are remarkably good at this. However, they don’t quite have the sensitivity to reliably detect moons like MK2. For example, the exoplanet 51 Eri b discovered in Gemini imagery is only a factor of a few times fainter than Makemake itself; MK2 is hundreds of times fainter still.
